Rotary International. Rotary International has over 1.2 million members worldwide. It is founded on the principles of service and integrity.
The Rotary motto is “Service Above Self.”
The Rotary Four-Way Test is:
“Of the things we think, say and do:
● Is it the truth?
● Is it fair to all concerned?
● Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
● Will it be beneficial to all concerned?”
Our Club. The Rotary Club of Tahoe-Incline has about 65 members. We meet every Thursday at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe from 7 to 8:15 am, except for the last Thursday of the month, when the club holds a social event in the evening. The club’s activities are organized by committees covering Education and Youth Programs, Club Service, Vocational, Fundraising, Rotary Foundation, Global Grants, Social and Membership. Members pay dues and meeting costs, and each member is expected to support the club through participation in committee service and club projects.
Community Service Committee. This committee organizes community service projects in the North Lake Tahoe area, including projects supporting local schools and the less fortunate. As a club, we also donate to many causes in Incline Village, focused on youth, education and support community needs along with focused service projects.
International Service Committee / Rotary Foundation. Rotary International has 7 Areas of Focus: promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene, saving mothers and children, supporting education, growing local economies, and protecting the environment. The club’s International Service Committee writes global grants to support these causes. We encourage our members to donate to The Rotary Foundation to support other grants and the “End Polio Now” initiative.
Vocational Service Committee. Rotary fosters the highest ethical standards in business and professions, recognizes the worthiness of all useful occupations, and dignifies each Rotarians occupation as an opportunity to serve society. This committee helps club members to share information about their careers, and to guide and encourage others in their career aspirations and professional development.
Youth Service Committee. There are many Rotary programs geared towards young people, including international youth exchange, leadership camps, and speech and music contests. The Youth Service Committee manages local participation in these programs, and the Interact Club at Incline High School. The club also sponsors college scholarships awarded each year. Some of the district grants we write are for projects benefiting the local public schools.
Club Service Committee. The club’s officers and board of directors manage the club. This committee assists with the orderly operation of the club by publishing a weekly newsletter and annual member directory, maintaining the club’s website and Facebook page, updating the club’s management system, and supporting various special projects.
Fundraising. Each year, our club distributes over $30,000 in our local community. We fund our projects and donations by hosting various major fundraisers, including the Battle Born Chili Cook-Off and the Best Ball for a Cause Golf Tournament. All members are expected to help with major fundraisers.
Fun Social Events. Our club has many social events throughout the year including the possibility of a night at the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, a Reno Aces game, beach BBQs, holiday parties, fireside dinners, etc. We celebrate our charter anniversary with a party in January each year. We roast our out-going presidents and induct their successors at a party in June. Our fundraisers are fun too! We typically hold a social event the last Thursday of each month.
Members. The strength of our club is the energy, enthusiasm and participation of our members. Rotarians are “People of Action.” Many of our members are leaders in the community. Many of us support nonprofits and their fundraisers outside of Rotary. Our common denominator is “service”. We always add a component of fun to whatever we do. Our weekly meetings include opportunities for fellowship, and a segment called “Happy Dollars” when members share with the club information about their lives, such as birthdays, anniversaries, trips, professional accomplishments, new additions to the family, etc. Many of our members have been active in the club for more than 10 years, which is a true testament to the inherent benefits of club membership.
